The Grizzly Rose is a hot spot in Denver for country dancing and live music. It opened in 1989 and has been a popular spot for dancing, country music concerts, playing pool, and meeting up with friends. You can even try riding a mechanical bull if you are inclined.

I first went to the Grizzly Rose shortly after it opened and took my first country two-step lesson there. I fell in love with country dancing, and I enjoy meeting my dance friends at “The Rose” whenever I have the opportunity. Lately, I have enjoyed learning new line dances.

Wednesday nights they offer free lessons, and Thursday ladies drink free. Their concerts are usually on Friday nights, and they have live music most nights of the week. Sunday is family night, and all ages are allowed.

Their large hardwood dance floor is the focal point of their 40,000 square foot space. There is a $10 cover charge to enter. It can get really full after 9:00pm on weekends, so I typically go early to dance for a few hours before the hordes of young people pack the place.

Find out more and check their calendar of events and lessons at grizzlyrose.com

I love to dance at the Denver Turnverein, located at 1570 N. Clarkson St, Denver. I started lessons there years ago and have been a fan ever since!

The Denver Turnverein building is a Historic State Landmark listed in the State Register of Historic Properties. The building is of a distinctive Mediterranean architectural style, and the architect was George L. Boettcher. The beautiful dance hall measures approximately 4700 square feet, and in 1964, maple floors were installed in the main ballroom.

Built in 1921, the building was used for German culture, exercise, and a social club. Originally, the Turnverein was a gymnastic club. In German, “Turn” means gymnastic and “Verein” means club. It is currently a dance organization with a beautiful dance floor and offers lessons almost every night of the week.

“The Turn”, as the dancers often refer to it, offers dance lessons and social dances in five different styles: West Coast Swing, Ballroom Dancing, Argentine Tango, Country Dancing and Lindy Hop.

Membership of $15/year is a requirement to dance, and supports the organization. You may try it out once before joining and beginner lessons are often free. There is a cash bar as well. Find out more at denverturnverein.com

I love going to movies at this historic movie theatre! The Mayan opened in 1930 as a movie house. It is one of country’s three remaining theaters designed in the Art Deco Mayan Revival style.

Located at 110 Broadway between First and Second Avenues, Denver, it was almost demolished in the 80s. Going there is an experience. (They don’t make them like they used to.) Look around at the art when you see a film there. Thank goodness this architectural gem was preserved!

Landmark Theaters has operated it since 1986. The balcony was closed and converted to two small theaters with smaller screens and the main level shows films on a large screen for a total of three different movie viewing opportunities.

Parking available in the Walgreens lot next to it. Restaurants like the Hornet are close by for a before or after movie meal. For more information and to find out what movies are playing, visit landmark-mayan-theatre-denver
