I had the pleasure of staying in this historic bed and breakfast inn located at 1207 Pennsylvania St, Denver. I love walking amongst old Denver homes that somehow survived demolition in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Staying overnight and imagining the life of the original family who lived there was a special experience.

This beautiful red sandstone mansion is located on Denver’s Millionaires Row and is a block away from the Molly Brown House Museum. The former Keating House was built in 1891 just before the silver crash of 1893 by Jeffery and Mary Keating. The mansion has a rich and interesting history. It remained a family mansion until 1923, and then it became the Buena Vista Hotel. Over the years, it went through numerous transformations of uses. In 1994 it became an inn. Carl S. Schmidt II bought the mansion in 2001. As owner and chef, he continues to preserve and maintain this National Landmark.

There are eight guestrooms in this inn, each named for a Colorado wildflower. I stayed in the Shooting Star Room, which was delightful. Breakfast was served from 7:30-9:30am. I enjoyed fresh fruit and yogurt as I sipped my coffee from a French Press. The main menu changes daily. On the morning of my stay, the main course was an egg soufflé with bacon and a croissant. It was delicious.

I highly recommend this inn for a staycation or visit to Denver. Carl Schmidt and his daughter Bailey are wonderful hosts. I suggest getting acquainted with the history of this mansion and surrounding Capitol Hill by staying a night or two. Take in the Molly Brown House Museum, walk around the neighborhood, and enjoy a dinner at a nearby restaurant while you are there. Save room for the fabulous breakfast they offer and linger in the living room to take in the ambiance. Learn more at capitolhillmansion.com

This 12-acre park is the site of Denver’s oldest house. It was named Four Mile House because it was located four miles away from the city along the Cherokee Trail, a wagon train headed for California that was originally a trail used by Indigenous peoples. The house was erected about 1858 as the last station offering services to the travelers on the stagecoach line to Denver. The museum and park include a log home, a barn with farm animals, and guided tours.

Located at 715 S. Forest St. in Denver, this park is perfect for a family outing. I love touring this historical location. My favorite part is the old house. Guides take guests through each room explaining the history of how the house came to be and how it evolved over the years.

Brothers Jonas and Samuel Brantner built a two-story log cabin along Cherry Creek in 1859, and in 1860 Mary Cawker bought it and turned it into an Inn with dancing on the second floor. Mary Cawker sold the house to Millie and Levi Booth in 1866. The Booths became beekeepers and built a bee house on the property. In 1870, the railroad arrived in Denver from Cheyenne, which ended the stagecoach route. The Booths then turned their efforts to farming.

In 1941, the Four Mile House officially became a historic monument. Denver designated it as a landmark in 1968, and it was listed a Registered Historic Place in 1969. It is a special place of significance in Denver’s history, and we are lucky that is it so well preserved and cared for.

Today Four Mile Historic Park is “dedicated both to preserving Colorado’s history and to creating new stories through exciting events and educational programs.” Each month of the year showcases different events. Hours are 10:00am-4:00pm on weekends, Friday-Sunday only. Enjoy this treasure trove of history and preservation. Find out more and purchase tickets at fourmilepark.org.

I love to dance at the Denver Turnverein, located at 1570 N. Clarkson St, Denver. I started lessons there years ago and have been a fan ever since!

The Denver Turnverein building is a Historic State Landmark listed in the State Register of Historic Properties. The building is of a distinctive Mediterranean architectural style, and the architect was George L. Boettcher. The beautiful dance hall measures approximately 4700 square feet, and in 1964, maple floors were installed in the main ballroom.

Built in 1921, the building was used for German culture, exercise, and a social club. Originally, the Turnverein was a gymnastic club. In German, “Turn” means gymnastic and “Verein” means club. It is currently a dance organization with a beautiful dance floor and offers lessons almost every night of the week.

“The Turn”, as the dancers often refer to it, offers dance lessons and social dances in five different styles: West Coast Swing, Ballroom Dancing, Argentine Tango, Country Dancing and Lindy Hop.

Membership of $15/year is a requirement to dance, and supports the organization. You may try it out once before joining and beginner lessons are often free. There is a cash bar as well. Find out more at denverturnverein.com
